About
In in the spring of 2023, a Kentucky farmer was plowing his fields when he noticed the earth behind him begin to sparkle in the sun. He jumped off his tractor and discovered that he had just unearthed hundreds of beautiful gold coins. Confederate gold coins, as it happened, the newest of which were dated 1863. And no one knows how or why they got there. Well, maybe one man does. Cotton trader, photographer, philanderer, and Civil War veteran (having served with dubious distinction on both sides) Jack Bailey returns in King Cotton II – Kentucky Gold.
Picking up where King Cotton ends, just moments after Lincoln’s assassination at Ford’s Theatre, Bailey flees Washington fearing he’ll be implicated in the conspiracy. His travels take him south and then west where, as only Bailey can, he gets tangled up with many of the famous characters of the day. Wild Bill Hickok, Buffalo Bill Cody, the Reno Gang, and Frank and Jesse James all make appearances. As do several previous acquaintances, including famed detective Allan Pinkerton, Ulysses S. Grant (now President), distiller John Beam, George Armstrong Custer, and P.T. Barnum.
Bailey’s exploits put him on the scene at a variety of notable events in U.S. history, including the first quick draw gunfight in the old west, herding longhorn up the Old Chisholm Trail, one of the earliest train robberies in America, Black Friday of September 1869, and the Battle of Beecher Island, Colorado. True to form, he also finds himself in a few boudoirs along the way, wooing ladies that range from famous actresses to borderline sociopaths.
As was the case with King Cotton, the events, timelines, and most of the characters in King Cotton II – Kentucky Gold are real, creating colorful and authentic backdrops for Bailey’s adventures.
